I guess my professional life really started with a move to London, age 20. I took a job on Oxford Street as a window dresser, under the nurturing influence of Mary Portas. From there a career in fashion design, marketing and branding followed, for a string of high street brands. The fashion industry was a great teacher. It allowed me to develop a strong sense of style and provided a highly commercial and challenging environment for my work. The training and experience I had in marketing and brand management, informs my commercial interior design projects today.
Simultaneously, in my home life I had already became a serial ‘doer upper’, decorating a total of 9 rented apartments in as many years!
As good as London life was, my youthful exuberance convinced me that there was another adventure to be had. Together with my husband I travelled Europe for a year, finally settling in Andalucía Spain. Located ‘off grid’ we renovated a traditional farmhouse, literally rebuilding it by hand.
The house was great example of how beautiful something becomes when constructed and decorated using materials from its own natural environment. For example, foraged river stone built walls which were then lime rendered and painted with the cobalt blue and burnt orange minerals dug out of our hillside. The whole space was furnished with bespoke rustic pieces, and embellished with a collection of artfully curated, found objects. This experience knitted seamlessly with my city style and its formula is the basis of my work back in Britain today.
That chapter of my life, and the homes we created in Spain, were featured in The Guardian magazine, Red, and Marie Claire.
A diploma and degree in Interior Design and several commissions later, I am here telling you my story...
I hope to be speaking to you in person soon. Sally.
